Webinar Recording: What goes up must come down, looking at load transfer from the pelvis to the...

29th June 2022

7-9pm BST

This will be an overview of different viewpoints on spinal biomechanics and how they link together to produce movements. We will also look at how energy is transferred through passive and active tissues, leading into ideas of how different interventions can influence these. This will include ideas around manual therapy and exercise; how we can then use these towards different goals and how that progression might look.

To start there will be a brief recap of SIJ anatomy and form/force closure, in particular how they lead into load transfer,  which will come together to show why the SIJ is often last to fail and should not be doing a great deal of the moving.

There will be a brief look into different theories of spinal coupled movement from the likes of Gracovetsky, Kapandji and Bogduk, including the neutral zone as it relates to spinal segments. Staying away from nerve root injuries, we will discuss how failures of different structures will impact the subsequent ability to move, altering how load is transferred through the spine.

Assessment will be dictated by the desired task so, we will discuss how we can create a principal lead assessment to differentiate what is the fundamental change we need to work on, to get the patient back on track. There will be videos of a few key qualitative assessments of mobility to help with this and get your creative brains working.

Treatment options can be varied and multiple so instead of looking at individual interventions we will group them according to what is the objective of said treatment; such as regaining mobility in a few segments or stiffening an area in response to injury to passive structures.

We will include some videos of a variety of MET, articulations and HVTs, with their different applications, to help explore alternative methods of treatment.  To tie it up we will follow up by some exercise ideas and how we can alter loading strategies for different outcomes with the same exercise.
