Overview

Most musculoskeletal practitioners will engage in some form of movement assessment as part of their routine assessment procedures, this is often done to aid understanding of factors which could be contributing to the presenting injury and so guide interventions. For this aim to be successful the insights gained from the assessment need to be reliable, accurate and valid.

This presentation will look at the available methods to assess movement: their relative strengths and weaknesses; interpreting true meaning from these assessment methods and ways of improving accuracy (reliability and sensitivity) of the assessments.

Aims:

  • Identify tools available to assessment movement
  • Develop an understanding of 3D motion capture
    • What do the outputs mean
    • Strengths and weaknesses of approach
  • Understand why and when 2D video analysis is a useful approach
    • Validity of 2D video
    • When 2D video is a great option
    • Weaknesses of 2D video
  • Have clarity about how a holistic qualitative approach to observing movement might work
    • Observation of movement; opportunities and issues
    • A more systematic approach to observing movement
