Michael Giakoumis

Little is known about quadriceps injuries. They occur less frequently than their counterparts of Hamstrings and Calves.

However, they also have a high recurrence rate, which would suggest we are unclear over the pathological process and the best ways to rehabilitate this injury.

A lack of certainty and knowledge can lead to unclear processes. The use of first principles can be utilised to breakdown the problem into building blocks to provide a clear process, that can then provide insight, clarity and understanding.

Specifically Michael will explore:

  • A clear process to apply scientific principles to Quadriceps injuries in the absence of evidence
  • The epidemiology and how it relates to the injury mechanism
  • How morphology, and functional biomechanics relate to the injury profile and provide principles to aid the goals of rehabilitation.
  • Utilising a framework approach to the application of these 1st principles to the rehabilitation process.
  • A complete journey of how to apply the above to a Rectus Femoris injury from diagnosis to Return to Performance.
  • A pathway of how to take the lessons learnt, and apply them to any muscle injury
