From Roman Structure to Fuller’s Universe of Tensegrity.

How the the foot uses both principles to move from walking to running

In mechanics and engineering, and even orthopaedics, we are led to believe that the structural integrity of a system is essential for stability and to provide a platform for movement. This notion of engineering is best depicted by the pyramids and Roman arches.

However, Buckminster Fuller (an Architect) challenged this notion in the 1920’s with his concept of “tensional integrity”. Where stability is maintained across structures through pervasive tensional force.

There is no better demonstration in the human body for the amalgamation of two worlds, historical engineering and modern day architecture, that is best captured in the human foot.

The foot is essential for posture; it is vital for controlling gait; it is a key component of running up to speeds to 24kph; and it is the essential element to change of direction.

Specifically James will explore:

  • The role of the foot in gait, running, sprinting and sport.
  • How the articular system and myofascial systems needs to work in harmony for optimal function
  • What are the real forces and strains in walking and running and how to build capacity for return to activity
  • How training the foot can reduce the load on the hip, decrease LBP and potentially reduce the risk of knee injuries.
  • How soft-tissue tension is the key to restoring dynamic activity and ultimately running
  • Why focusing on plantar flexion is more important than Dorsi-flexion
  • Which muscle has mythical powers
  • How functional markers  for return to activity and sport vary in the general population to elite athletes.
