Tom Dekkers

Low back pain is the leading cause global disability and comes with large personal and socio-economic costs to those affected by it. It forms a complex and challenging clinical entity – one in which the specific patho-anatomical diagnosis cannot be identified in the majority of patients.

Exercise is commonly recommended as a means to manage low back pain. Much research has been carried out investigating the effects of exercise but there still remains uncertainty as to the best type and optimal dose for patients with low back pain.

This presents the treating clinician with uncertainty regarding how to best apply
this medicine in the clinical setting.

In this webinar, Thomas takes participants on a journey, discussing the state of the art, the limitations in the research and then presenting a new approach for effective and individualised exercise prescription for patients with low back pain.

Specifically Thomas will explore:

  • The complex and multi-dimensional nature of low back pain and it’s
    epidemiology.
  • What the evidence to date does and doesn’t tell us about exercise for back pain.
  • A new paradigm for how to prescribe exercise for low back pain, drawing on multiple schools of thought and emerging research.
