In medical training you may hear the term “common things are common”, however, “things” can only be common once we are aware of them and if “we do not know what we do not know”, then our judgement will always be biased to what we currently know.

The term Femoro-acetabular impingement was coined in 1999, and subsequently gave rise to a myriad of options to treat it. Given its strong morphological component, FAIS should have been causing problems long before we had terminology to define it, and we should have had different treatment options for it prior to 1999. Therefore it would have been “common” but we were unaware of it.

This not being the case, our purpose in this seminar is, in part, to investigate both why symptoms of FAIS were “undefined” before we established standardised diagnostic criteria, AND whether the diagnosis is as impactful as it is prevalent.

Emerging in the literature are different components of impingement from morphological; to micro-instability; to functional impingement. Differentiating each of these and how to treat each one can become a big challenge.

Specifically James will explore:

The prevalence of FAIS and its correlation to symptoms.

How to assess and treat microinstability.

How can you ascertain functional instability.

✓Why the peri-articular system is the key to influencing FAIS symptoms and how to restore its function

✓ How (and when) to prescribe exercises to correct each aspect of impingement—and when NOT to.

AND SO MUCH MORE
